1914
Although not on the Raleigh Park site itself, Kensington's character in the first half of the twentieth century was shaped significantly by the nearby Kensington Racecourse, which opened in 1893 on land now occupied by the University of New South Wales.
During both World Wars the racecourse served as a military camp. Many of the first ANZACs trained there in 1914 before embarking for Egypt and Gallipoli, and the site was again used for troops and horses during the Second World War. The Wills factory continued operating throughout, with many of its employees enlisting.
The racecourse land was resumed in 1950 and UNSW was established on the site, fundamentally changing the suburb's identity.
